These golden, crispy treats trace their origins to Spanish immigrants who brought their culinary traditions to Mexico during the colonial era. Over the centuries, churros have evolved into an iconic Mexican street food, cherished for their simplicity and irresistible charm.

These deep-fried delights, often dusted with cinnamon sugar and served with a side of warm chocolate dipping sauce, have become a symbol of Mexican comfort food. Whether enjoyed as a sweet breakfast indulgence or a late-night snack, churros hold a special place in the hearts of locals and tourists alike.

As you savor the sweet, doughy goodness of a churro, you are not only tasting a delicious treat but also a piece of Mexican history. It's a humble yet enduring culinary legacy that continues to bring joy to generations of food lovers, both in Mexico and beyond.

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (make sure to have some extra on hand for the frying)
  • 1 1/2 tbsp white sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Coating
  • 1 1/2 tsp Ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup White sugar
  • Mexican Chocolate Dipping Sauce
  • 1 oz tablet of Mexican chocolate (we recommend Nestle-Abuelita | chopped)
  • 1/4 cup heavy Whipping Cream
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp chili powder (adjust to taste, optional)
Making Churros
    Equipment
  1. Cloth pastry bag or heavy-duty plastic pastry bag

  2. Large, star pastry tip

  3. Deep-fry thermometer

  4. Making the Coating
  5. Step 1: Mix

Simply add both the cinnamon and sugar together in a small bowl and mix!

  6. Making the Churros
  7. Step 1
    1. In a saucepan, combine water, 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar, salt, and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup of all-purpose flour until the mixture forms a smooth ball.

  8. Step 2
    1. Heat 2 quarts of oil in a large, heavy-bottomed stockpot over medium-high heat until it reaches 375ºF (190ºC).

  9. Step 3
    1. While the oil is heating, mix together 1/2 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon in a shallow dish. Set aside.

  10. Step 4
    1. Transfer the churro dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip (or simply use a plastic bag with a corner snipped off).

  11. Step 5
    1. Pipe 4-inch long strips of dough into the hot oil, using scissors or a knife to cut them free. Fry a few churros at a time until they turn golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.

  12. Step 6
    1. Use a slotted spoon to remove the churros from the oil and let them drain on paper towels.

    1. While the churros are still warm, roll them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat them evenly.

  13. Making the Chocolate Dipping Sauce
    1. In a saucepan, heat 1/2 cup of heavy cream over medium heat until it comes to a simmer.

    1. Reduce the heat to low, and add 4 oz of Mexican chocolate, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon chili powder (adjust to your preferred level of spiciness), and a pinch of salt.

    1. Stir constantly until the chocolate is completely melted, and the sauce is smooth and well combined. Remove from heat.

  14. To enhance the richness of your creation, introduce the butter. Don't forget the vanilla, a touch of cinnamon, and if you're feeling adventurous, a splash of liqueur for an extra layer of flavor.

  15. Should your chocolate concoction ever become a tad too thick, fear not! Simply stir in more cream, one tablespoon at a time, until you attain the desired, velvety consistency. Your chocolate delight awaits!

  16. Serving
    1. Serve the warm churros with a side of the luscious Mexican chocolate sauce for dipping.

    1. Enjoy the crispy, sugary churros with the rich and slightly spicy chocolate sauce. Perfect for dessert or a special treat any time of the year!

Pro Tip: Customize the level of spiciness in the chocolate sauce by adjusting the amount of chili powder to suit your taste buds.
